Rustic Church From Thrifted Finds

Hey y’all, hey! Today we are crafting with some thrifted wood from a salvage store. It is already perfectly aged with a red patina, and rustic as can be!

Check out the video below, or follow along here for all the steps to make one of your own!

Supplies:

Thrifted: Wood from a Seattle salvage store, 16 gauge wire from Goodwill Outlet Bins, hymnal

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint: White Swan

Amazon: Waverly Antique Wax, Rub ‘n Buff (gold), Mod Podge, Posca Paint Pens Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

This is the chippy wood that I got from a salvage store in Seattle. Husband Dave cut the pieces and drilled holes for me. It’s going to be beautiful!

The tallest one is 24″ and the side pieces are 15″, and I left the rustic red because it’s already gorgeous!

I used my paint markers to draw the doors, then painted them with White Swan.

Next, I painted “snow” on the tops, bottom and edges, using White Swan. It was more than a dry brush, but less than thick paint. I dried them with my heat tool.

I sanded down the doors and snow just enough to take the bright white away, then I used 16 guage wire to connect the sides to the center. I used my hammer to flatten the wires on back.

I used a thrifted hymnal for the doors. My doors were taller than the hymnal sheets, so I just pieced them together.

I put Mod Podge on the doors, placed the sheets, then put Mod Podge over them. Next, I used gold Rub ‘n Buff to make the door edges shimmer, just applying with my finger. I also added Rub ‘n Buff to the outer edges and the seams of the board. (Seams are where they connect with the wire.)

I added a cross by cutting pieces of wood that Dave brought to me. (It’s like kindling.)

Next, I stained it with Waverly Antique Wax and rubbed on some Rub ‘n Buff.

TIP: Use rusted nails to make a cross. One of our friends suggested a cross made from nails can be found at Hobby Lobby!

TIP: You can find hymnal sheets to print on Etsy if you don’t have a hymnal.

I love how this turned out, y’all!
