Hey y’all, hey! I’m excited to share this technique with you! We are making a fall / Halloween project with foam strips that look like wood. You can use paint sticks if you don’t have access to foam board, it works either way.
Check out the video below, or follow along here for all the steps!

Supplies:

Dollar Tree: 12X12 canvas, black chalkboard paint, foam board (cut into 1″ strips to make nine strips)
Walmart: Waverly Antique Wax
Thrifted: Metal wire pumpkins (there are two and they were marked down to .50!)
Amazon: Xacto knife, E6000 Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)
Before we get started, did y’all see yesterday’s project? It was so much fun to make! Click here or on the image to see the post!

Speaking of fun projects, we used foam board from Dollar Tree a while back to make a frame for a Christmas gift bag! Check it out by clicking HERE or on the image below!

Let’s make it!
I found the metal pumpkins at a thrift store and they were marked down to only fifty cents for two! I knew they had to have a crafty home.
The foam strips are about 1″ wide and they are from a Dollar Tree foam board. I just cut them with my Xacto knife (see Amazon link above). I used nine strips for this project.
The Dollar Tree canvas is 12X12, which is great for other crafts because scrapbook paper is usually 12X12 too!
TIP: You can use paint sticks to get the same effect!

I trimmed the foam strips down a little longer than my canvas, painted them with Waverly Antique Wax and then dried them with my heat tool. Careful with the heat, the foam can warp or melt!
Next, I brushed on just a little bit of black chalkboard paint to create a wood look.
TIP: Be sure to paint the ends and edges of the strips.

I staggered them a little, then used hot glue to adhere them to my canvas. I made sure the edges were all painted, and now we have a “wood look” surface for the pumpkin!

I would have used E6000 to glue the metal pumpkin onto the surface, but I need a new supply, so hot glue to the rescue!

I removed a wood bead hanger from another Dollar Tree sign to create a hanger for this one. I just put the ends in hot glue and covered them with scraps of the foam board.

And here is our finished project! I may add a bow later on, but I think it turned out so cute.

Let me know in the comments if you have created a faux wood project! I appreciate each and every one of you!
Thanks so much for stopping by,
XOXO-Erin
