Thrifted Dresser Flip

Hey y’all, hey! I am so excited to be giving this furniture a new life. There are links below for all of the products I used, plus a link for a tutorial that Lizzy and I made for Furniture Painting Basics, so check those out. My secret is simple: use good paint and good brushes, which are also linked below!

Check out the videos below, or follow along here for all the steps!

Here’s what I’m starting with:

Products I used:

Amazon: Orbital sander, TSP , (or you can use vinegar for cleaning), sanding sponge, Waverly Antique Wax, Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff, Minwax Polycrylic spray Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: Faded Burlap, Black Velvet, Clear Wax

Iron Orchid Designs: Trompe L’oeil Laurel paint inlay,

Lizzy and Erin Lil Hickabilly and Be Kind paint brushes,

And: we have blogs on how to make your own chalk paint and a tutorial for Furniture Painting Basics

Let’s refinish it!

Here is the dresser before. I’ve already sanded and cleaned, and removed hardware.

TIP: Set up outside or in a garage / shed. Be patient, it may take a day or more, so enjoy the process! You will have a beautiful piece that is customized just for you to enjoy for years to come.

Here are some of the products I used. See Amazon link above for the Orbital sander, click on these links to see Lil Hickabilly paint brush, IOD paint inlay and Faded Burlap paint from Milton’s Daughter and Debi’s Design Diary.

There were some small places that the orbital sander was too big to get to, so I used an older sanding sponge that wasn’t too abrasive.

TIP: You can scrub your sanding sponge on concrete / asphalt to dull it if you need to.

Here we go!

To prep, I removed all the hardware and sanded down the furniture pieces. I began painting the first coat with my Lizzy and Erin Lil Hickabilly custom paint brush and Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint in Faded Burlap

The first coat is on!

The second coat is on!

The inlay:

I trimmed the Iron Orchid Design inlay pieces from their sheet, then painted a coat of Faded Burlap. I applied the inlay while the paint was wet, smoothed it a little and then spritzed it with water and tapped it with a towel to press it down.

I repeated these steps for each piece, and waited for them to dry.

TIP: These Iron Orchid Design paint inlays are reusable! You can use them at least two or more times!

I used Waverly Antique Wax for the top with my “Be Kind” paintbrush from Lizzy and Erin Designs

I used Debi’s Design Diary DIY Wax to seal the paint. It darkens it up just a little, as you can see in the image below. I started out with a paintbrush, but then decided to use a rag. Either way works.

TIP: If you are painting over red, you have to seal it and THEN paint it. It may be either a red wood or stained red, but you can paint a little test spot and see if the color bleeds through.

Here’s how it’s going:

I need to go back to Hobby Lobby and get drawer knobs and handles. The ones I picked out won’t work with the curved wood. Be sure to measure or take an original pull with you when you shop for new ones. There’s a science there, y’all! (Ask me how I know! LOL)

The hardware:

Y’all. This was probably the hardest part! I bought some knobs that didn’t work out, then returned them and came back with these knobs and handles. And then the dilemma: should I paint the white ones dark, or paint the dark ones white? Our friends on my live had ideas: use all white, use all dark, just mix the two!

Decision made! I went with all dark.

I painted the white hardware with Black Velvet from Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint, then used my heat tool to dry them. Next, I used Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff to add some “brassy” touches to them.

I added Rub ‘n Buff to the small ones also, just to make them match better. (See last image below.)

TIP: If you are spray painting hardware, either use a pegboard or just cardboard, screw the hardware on to it and then paint. Also, if you are using a heat tool to dry your hardware, remember it gets hot!

I used Minwax Polycrylic spray to seal the hardware. Do this outside or in a well ventilated area.

And here’s our finished “flip” of this sad and thrifted, but now beautiful piece of furniture! Isn’t she lovely?

Let me know in the comments if you have “flipped” a piece of furniture. It’s probably my favorite thing! I appreciate your comments.

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
