Sunflowers For Summer

Hey y’all, hey! Today we are “jazzing up” a piece of Dollar Tree sunflower “artwork”! Check out the video below, or just follow along here on the blog for the steps. This was such a fun project!

Supplies:

Dollar Tree: Three wood planks, framed canvas with artwork, tacks, raffia (I used Cut Tacks but thumb tacks work also. You can paint them or color them with markers.)

Lowe’s or Home Depot: Small wood shims

Amazon: Craft sticks, Xacto knife Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Walmart: Waverly Antique Wax

Stash: Burlap, ribbon

But before we start crafting, let’s just talk about the HUMIDITY, y’all! Most of you know I used to live in Savannah, and THIS WAS MY HAIR on humid days! My hair and I cannot do humid y’all! This summer heat has got us all just opening that front door and saying, “Nah. Just nah.”

Let’s make it!

Here’s the sunflower image as it came from Dollar Tree. It is on a framed canvas.

To create my surface, I used three of the wood planks from Dollar Tree and connected them with craft sticks and hot glue. Next, I alternated the wood shims (they are thinner on one end and thicker on the other) and added them with hot glue. If I had a flat canvas I would have used that, but this works just as well. Use what you’ve got, girl!

The shims: You can see the difference on the widths of the ends of the shims.

I misted them with water before using Waverly Antique Wax (brown stain), then dried it with my heat tool.

I cut the image out of the frame with my Xacto knife, then used pinking shears on the top and bottom. I then just pulled the strings on the sides to fray it.

First, I placed the burlap on the surface to check the size, then frayed the edges. I used hot glue to attach it to the wood.

TIP: Hot glue is HOT, y’all! Use something to press your fabric onto your surface. A silicone sheet or silicone finger covers would do the trick!

I hot glued the sunflower image onto the burlap, then hammered on my Cut Tacks in the corners.

TIP: You can use thumb tacks! Just color the heads with paint or Sharpie markers.

I added a ribbon hanger to the back, using hot glue and craft sticks for extra security!

I stained the edges of the canvas (you should do this before attaching the “art” to your surface. OOPS!), then added some raffia to the image with hot glue.

I hope you enjoyed this craft! So many possibilities with Dollar Tree “art”, and so many ways to make it your own! Let me know in the comments what you might make with some “artwork”! I appreciate each and every one of you.

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
