Spring Birdhouse Decor

Hey girl, hey! I decided to do a little craft redemption for an “ooogalay” project I did last year. (Ooogalay is Hickabilly for ‘ugly'”) Anyway, I like this project much better than the first version, so y’all check out the video below or follow along here on the blog so you can make one too!

Supplies:

Amazon: Bead threader, sanding sponge Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Dollar Tree: Long sign (they have them every season), bird house boxes, Spanish moss, greenery, Jot glue

Goodwill Outlet Bins: Little birds

Michaels Grab Bag: Florals

Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: Apothecary, Bohemian Blue

Walmart: Waverly Antique Stain (you can use brown or any dark paint, just add a little water to it.)

Lowes or Home Depot: Small wood shims

Stash: raffia, burlap ribbon

Let’s make it!

Here’s the one I’m going to redo.

I used small wood shims, alternating the high and low ends (see below), and hot glued them to the surface.

Next, I spritzed the shims with water and then painted them with Waverly Antique Wax.

TIP: You can use brown paint if you don’t have Waverly.

Then I dried it with my heat tool.

And now for those adorable birdhouses:

CLICK HERE for an earlier blog post on how to get the crackle effect. I’ll also take you through the steps here:

To begin: I started with a plain wood bird house, painted it with Waverly Antique Wax (you can use any dark paint), then added a coat of Debi’s Design Diary Bohemian Blue paint.

After painting the base coats, apply school glue with a paint brush. A thick coat will give you large cracks, a thin coat will make thinner ones.

Once the glue is on, and while it is still wet, add your top coat of paint. I put mine on kinda thick (it’s the lighter green color; Apothecary by Debi’s Design Diary). Don’t overwork this step! Just get your paint on over the glue, then dry it with a heat tool or blow dryer.

Next, I used my scraper to scrape off some of the top coat of paint. The roof line in the first image is before being scraped, and the third image is after.

TIP: You don’t have to have a specific tool for this, just use something like a craft stick or even a butter knife. If you scrape too much, just dab a bit of paint over it.

I used my sanding sponge for some extra distressing.

It’s starting to look cute, y’all!

Speaking of sanding…..

I sanded the surface and brought out the natural wood for that rustic look.

Did y’all hear the struggle bus blowing its horn? It was here for me… I got ON it, y’all! But my friends on the live video helped me figure out what to put in the little box. Flowers? No. Moss? Yes! It’s coming together!

I added greenery and some little birds that I found at the Goodwill Outlet.

My burlap ribbon was a bit narrow, so I just put two rows together and topped them with a layer of open weave burlap “ladder” ribbon.

If y’all craft with beads, this little bead threader (linked above in my Amazon store) is a must-have!

To make your beaded hanger:

Tie a knot in a length of twine. Then put the beads on the threader, put your twine in the eye, and pull the beads off of the threader and onto your twine!

And here it is! I’m showing the back so you can see how the burlap and beaded hanger are attached.

Let me know in the comments below what you are creating today! I appreciate each and every one of you!

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
