Spooky Framed Ghostly Hand

Hey y’all, hey! This was going to be a fall pumpkin project, but became something more! Check out the video below or follow along here on the blog for the details!

Yard Sale: Frame for a dollar!

Dollar Tree: Canvas

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint: Faded Burlap, Old School

Let’s make it!

You’ll see in the video above that it was going to be a pumpkin project, but y’all, this hand was just beckoning to be part of the show, actually centerstage! So the hand won out!

I started out with this purple frame I found at a yard sale for just a dollar! I wanted a weathered wood look, so I painted it with a dark gray called Old School from Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint. I used my Lil Hickabilly paint brush from our own Lizzy and Erin Designs. It is great to get into the nooks and crannies!

I dried it with my heat tool. You can see the lighter gray now!

Next, I painted Faded Burlap over the gray followed by Waverly Antique Wax (brown) and dried it with my heat tool.

I sanded it down a bit and added antique gold Rub n Buff. It was this step that made me think more “Halloween” than pumpkins and fall!

I put a project inside the frame, it’s one we did last year in our subscription group Craftin’ and Laughin’. I used a Dollar Tree canvas for the surface and the hand also came from the Dollar Tree. If needed, you can age the hand by scrubbing on some black or dark gray paint.

You can use pages from an old book for your background. Just distress them with a bit of watered down paint or ink.

You can dye cheesecloth for the webbing, or shop for black spider webs. Use plastic spiders, wood corner accents and make the candles with paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls. Just paint the “candles” black, drip hot glue on the tops, and paint the glue black, adding Rub n Buff over the black. Use battery operated votive candles (painted black) and glue onto the top of the cylinders. You may want to fill them with scrap paper first to support the votives. Glue the hand, drape the “webbing” and you’ve got a creepy display for Halloween!

What a fun, spooky project! Let me know in the comments what you might make with a yard sale frame! I appreciate all of your comments!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

XOXO-Erin
