Hey y’all, hey! We have a brand new Woodshop launch that we have just released! Let’s get crafty with this STUNNING dragonfly!
The one we are crafting with today is our “Simple” Spindle Dragonfly so you can see how versatile it is. There are so many ways to finish this one! I’ll also share the “Fancy” version here on the blog.
Check out the video below to see the entire release. We even have some interchangeable pieces that you can use throughout the year! We will keep adding to the various themes and seasons. Click here to visit our Woodshop and see the current release!

Supplies:

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: White Swan, Faded burlap
Amazon: DAP Rapid Fuse super glue, sanding sponge Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)
Michaels: Tim Holtz Ground Espresso Distress Oxide, Folk Art Painted Finishes: Rust. (Mine is old, so if you can’t find it, you can use cinnamon and Mod Podge)
Dollar Tree: Wall tile, black chalkboard paint
Stash: Floral wire
Let’s make it!
But before we start crafting, here’s the “Fancy” Spindle Dragonfly. Isn’t she beautiful?
The difference between the two is that this one has a scroll detail, while the “Simple” one has more of a blank slate. Which one do you prefer? It’s hard to choose, I know!
This is the first one I made. I’ll make this next one to coordinate with it.

I used DAP Rapid Fuse super glue (linked above in supply list) to adhere the wood layers together. It is a thin, permanent glue that doesn’t create bulk between layers.

I used a Dollar Tree wall tile for my wings.
There are two layers to the dragonfly; one is the base (solid wings) and the other is the top layer. I used the top layer to trace the wings on the tile, then cut the pieces out.
I then put the top layer onto the base and traced the inside so I would know where to place the wall tile pieces. I put just a thin coat of hot glue on the wall tile (it will melt if the glue is too thick and hot), then added the rest of the pieces.

I want the two dragonflies (Simple and Fancy) to coordinate, but not be just alike, so I used colors and techniques on the Simple one that would make them just a little similar.

I painted the wings with black acrylic and rust (old from my stash), but if you don’t have a rust colored paint, you can use cinnamon and Mod Podge. I then sanded it down just enough for some of the wall tile to show through. (That picture where I’m laughing? Dave. Y’all should see these videos… anything can and WILL happen!)
I painted the body (thorax and abdomen) black and also brushed on Faded Burlap from Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paints. I’ll go back and sand that a little.

Next, I used Faded Burlap to paint the top layer.
For the body, I used black and Faded Burlap and then sanded it.

I’m enjoying getting used to using a stamp pad for adding to my basic paint colors! I just rubbed the stamp pad onto the top of the wings.

Thin floral wire will become the antennae for our dragonfly. I inserted it into the holes at the top of the head, then snipped it in two where you see the rounded end. I secured those snipped ends into the grooves, then used DAP Rapid Fuse to glue on the body. It also covers the wires on the front.

I also used DAP to adhere the back of the head.

I used a pencil to curl the wires and then clothespins to hold the pieces together while they dried.

I used twine for the hanger. There are already holes in the wood to put the twine in!
Here it is all finished, and so stinkin’ cute, y’all! If you want to use yours outside, you’ll want to seal it with some sort of wood sealant.
