Patriotic Rustic Tin Display

Hey y’all, hey! This rustic arrangement has stars in place of florals, giving it a true “Americana” feel! Check out the video below or follow along here for all the details.

Supplies:

Dollar Tree: 11 X 14 flat canvas, craft sticks, wood cubes

Amazon: Rusty star, Ranger Ground Espresso ink Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Lowes or Home Depot: Large shims

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint: White Swan, Hey Sailor (blue) and Marquee (red) and clear wax

Walmart: Waverly Antique Wax

Thrifted: Antique tin, greenery

Stash: Berry garland, raffia, buttons

Let’s make it!

I used this tin for this project because it is red, white and blue, but you can use anything!

TIP: Use a cardboard or metal box lid, or make a shape with craft sticks. Paint whatever color you choose, then add a piece of canvas or burlap. Stamp or write “USA” or something similar!

My project is on an 11 X 14 flat canvas and it took 11 shims to cover the canvas. I laid them out to check the size, then hot glued them on (alternating ends; one end is wider than the other), spritzed with water (the white bottle is my water mister) and then stained with Waverly Antique Wax.

I used 15 craft sticks to make three stars. I cut the rounded ends off (you can usually cut them off with scissors) and used hot glue to join them into the star shapes. I started out by making a triangle, then just layered them together. I did tuck one under and then over, as you can see here in the first photo. It’s about 11:00 and 4:00 (if it were a clock!).

I started out by painting them all white and stenciling stars on them, but decided to go with painting overall. Next, I sanded them down just a bit and used clear wax from Milton’s Daughter to darken the blue.

I used Ranger Ground Espresso ink to rustic them up a little.

TIP: You can make stars with paint sticks (even the huge ones), or yardsticks!

I used E6000 (for permanent hold) and hot glue for adhering my tin to the surface. I also “dirtied” up my tin with whatever Waverly Antique Wax was left on my brush. It made it look rusty!

I hot glued the greenery onto my surface and set the stars on top to see how I liked them before adhering them onto the project.

I used some pieces of wired berry garland and twisted each piece around the handle of a paintbrush to make them curly, then hot glued them in place.

Next, I added raffia and a rusty star onto the tin.

I used the little wood cubes from Dollar Tree to raise the stars up.

Then I added raffia and buttons onto the stars and badabing! It’s done!

You can use this just as it is or add a hanger made of wire or beads, or even a strip of fabric.

Let me know in the comments what you think of our craft today! I appreciate each and every one of you!

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
