Patriotic Americana Shutters

Hey girl, hey! Today we are crafting with some thrifted shutters! We are going to make them rustic, with stars and stripes, and hang a rusty star at the top center.

Check out the videos below or follow along here for all the steps!

Supplies:

Lizzy and Erin Designs: Lil Hickabilly and Be Kind custom paintbrushes

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: Bohemian Blue, White Swan, Marquee (red)

Amazon: Stars stencil, Deco Earth paint, Antique gold Rub n Buff Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Ross: Large metal star (Pretty sure I thrifted it, but there’s a Ross sticker on the back!)

Walmart: Minwax Polycrylic clear matte finish

Thrifted: Wood shutters ($8 at Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store)

Let’s make it!

So I’m thinking of setting up my painted shutters with these thrifted milk cans and that star, maybe on my front porch.

OR… put the star on the painted shutters. I think I’ll decide once I’m finished with painting!

I started by painting these wood shutters white, using my Lizzy and Erin Lil Hickabilly brush! It’s great for painting big surfaces like furniture, and well, shutters!

The top of the shutters are Bohemian Blue and the red strips are Marquee, both from Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint.

TIP: For shutters, it is easier to paint the strips from left to right rather than up and down.

These stars, y’all.

I used the largest stencil from a pack I got from Amazon, but it’s hard to stencil stars on these shutters! They are not perfect AND there may or may not be an accurate number to fully represent the American flag. It’s just decor, y’all, it’s just decor.

I used my orbital sander with 200 grit sandpaper and heavily sanded it to get that rustic look.

Our friends (on my live) liked this star better, so I’ll antique it and use it instead. I’ve had this one for a while. Originally I painted it teal and it’s been just waiting for the perfect project!

Let’s make this star POP!

I’m using a new-to-me paint called Deco Earth. It’s a premium 70% reclaimed acrylic paint, which means it didn’t go into landfills like tons of paint that are dumped each year. I used it on a previous project and even though I watered it down, the colors are absolutely vibrant!

For the star, I used Brown, Red Maple and then Chestnut, then dried it with my heat tool. Next, I used Rub n Buff in Antique Gold to bring out the details. I toned it down just a smidge by dry brushing some red on it.

I hung the star on the shutters and wow! I love how this turned out!

Check out how it is staged and let me know what you think by leaving a comment! I appreciate each and every one of you.

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
