Paper Mache Jumbo Christmas Ornament DIY: Part One!

Hey girl, hey! I can’t stop thinking about the paper mache ornaments I saw in the Christmas section at Walmart. The shelves are filling with some of the cutest decorations I’ve seen in a long time! I’m obsessed!

Now y’all, we are going backwards with this. First, I’m finishing an older project and then starting another one. We won’t finish the second one today because it has to dry, but you can see the progress on the video below or follow along here on the blog! Let’s do this!

Supplies:

Amazon: DAP glue, Stick Fast glue, Deco Earth cream paint, Gold Rub n Buff Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Walmart: Pumpkin bucket

Kitchen: Flour, water, salt

Thrifted: Tart pan

Let’s make it!

Before we start, click HERE to see the way we created a paper mache pumpkin!

I sure thought I knew how to make paper mache, but the Internet said, “Girl, no. Just stoppit.” As a result, THIS mixture is different from the old glue and water we used to use! I am using flour, water and salt, and no, my gloves don’t match. It’s fine, it’s just fine.

Here’s one I started a couple years ago with a Dollar Tree beach ball and didn’t finish. It was too “oogaleee” (really ugly!) to share! Today I put some cream colored Deco Earth paint in a cup with water for the wash and painted some onto the ornament. I spritzed it with water and dabbed off the excess water. I dabbed it because the original paint is from Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint and it might smear if I wipe it. That last image is the inspiration from the ones I saw at Walmart.

For the top, I used a thrifted tart pan. I just made a hole in the end so the hanger can go through. I applied Rub n Buff all over to create a gold top. I used some gold ribbon for the hanger, and just threaded it through the hole, put a few knots in the bottom and hot glued it inside the top. I used DAP Rapid Fuse glue to add it to the ornament. I prefer Stick Fast but I have to order some and I think it works better than DAP.

TIP: The little sauce cups from Dollar Tree would make great tops too!

And this one is finished! Imagine several of these in different sizes and coordinating patterns hanging in a corner at Christmas! And you can do this with balloons!

Now let’s do the next one from scratch! I’m using a white plastic pumpkin from Walmart. First, I removed the handle.

The recipe I saw on Pinterest said to use:

1 cup flour (I used all purpose)

1 1/2 cups water

whisk together.

1 teaspoon salt (so it doesn’t mold)

Y’all, mine was too dry so I kept adding water! I may have 2 1/2 cups of water in it.

I soaked strips of kraft paper in the bowl and placed it onto the pumpkin. It’s kinda gross, y’all, but it was actually a lot of fun! I repeated it for about three layers then started placing dry strips over the wet ones. I filled in holes and covered the bottom with more wet strips. I placed a sheet of wax paper over a flower pot and set it aside to dry over the weekend.

TIP: Place on a silicone mat or wax paper to dry.

TIP: The recipe from Pinterest says it can be kept in the refrigerator for three days.

Have you made a paper mache project lately? Let me know in the comments what you’ve made! It’s so much fun, and now I want to make a bunch more!

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
