Let’s make it!
Girl, this American Flag 3 Panel is a beefy kit! Three panels and lots of stars and stripes! I had already painted the red, white and blue in advance since we are doing two crafts today. Since I painted the background white I won’t need to use all of the stripes. It is designed to paint some white and others red, but I like the dimension of a white background with the red raised up. I used Waverly Antique Wax to stain the frames.
I put the stripes (slats) onto masking tape to hold them while painting and added some stain to the edges to make it a little rustic. I sanded the pieces with my sanding sponge to continue the rustic effect.
Next, I used my Distress Oxide Ground Espresso ink pad to add some “age” to the blue, then used my brush to spread it out a little. I enjoyed “previewing” how it’s going to look!

I began gluing everything together using my Stick Fast glue. I use clothespins to hold the pieces until the glue dries.
I love, love, love this project, y’all! I will probably mount the three panels onto a rustic piece of wood.

Now for our second project today: the Patriotic Barn Quilt! I also prepared this one before the live video by painting the red and white parts. I painted the background, but didn’t like how it looked, so I made it darker and made some black lines with a marker to make the background look like wood planks.
To make it darker, I used Dark and Decrepit from Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint that I get from Milton’s Daughter. Y’all, she is wonderful to help with orders and among a list of items, she also carries all the IOD products in her online store!
I just brushed the Dark and Decrepit along the edges and made streaks across, then wet the brush with water to blend it out a bit. Remember you can work with yours until you get the finish you want!

Here’s how it’s going:

I set the rest of the thin red pieces into the star, then used a sheet of red scrapbook paper for the larger pieces. I used Mod Podge to adhere the paper onto the wood. Next, I painted the remaining pieces white and cut pieces of blue with stars from a napkin. I separated the two ply napkin pieces and painted Mod Podge onto the wood to adhere the napkin.
Next, I sanded the edges of the blue pieces to remove excess, and dried them with my heat tool.
TIP: Make sure each piece fits just right (it’s like a puzzle) before adding color or any other media. Each one is cut from its own specific area and one might fit a little better than another.

I took out the pieces with paper and napkins just to sand the rest that was painted.

I placed everything back together, used my Stick Fast glue to adhere the star to the base and the little stars to the project, and it’s done!

Here are all three projects we’ve done so far! The blog for “God Bless America” can be found HERE, and the kit is HERE in our Woodshop!
