Happy Fall! Here’s Your Sign!

Hey y’all! Sometimes it’s fun to make something a “little bit better” than it was while it was hanging out at the Dollar Tree, right? That’s what we are doing today… and we’re having fun with it. Check out the video below or follow along here for details!

Supplies:

Dollar Tree: “Fall in love” sign, rectangle seasonal sign

Hobby Lobby: “Happy Fall” wood sentiment

Stash: raffia, fabric, buttons

Amazon: Paint scraper, sanding sponge Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Habitat for Humanity thrift store: Wood pieces (Luan? Veneer?)

Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: Summer Crush, Queen Bee, Gypsy Green

Walmart: Waverly Antique Wax

Let’s make it!

I used my heat tool and paint scraper to remove the letters and embellishments from the Dollar Tree sign. I saved the letters in case I wanted to use them today on this or later on a future project.

TIP: If your sign has glitter or rough places after removing the embellishments, just sand it down a little with a fine grit sanding sponge.

I found this wood at the Habitat for Humanity thrift store, and our friends said it might be luan or veneer. I am hoping to find more though, because it is easy to cut and easy to work with. Some of our friends suggested using balsa wood, and that I can get it at Hobby Lobby, so that’s an option also.

I cut them to fit the existing panels, but they are a little narrow. Y’all know I always say use what you’ve got? That’s what I’m doing, so it’s all good!

I glued the wood panels over the existing ones on the sign, and I already like it more than the original!

These colors just FEEL like fall, y’all! Summer Crush (orange), Queen Bee (yellow) and Gypsy Green are just perfect for our project!

I didn’t want a thick coat of paint, so I spritzed the wood with water before painting, which makes a thinner coat. Then I dried all of the panels with my heat tool.

I spritzed the wood again then put a very light coat of Waverly Antique Wax on to give it a rustic look.

I cut off the original stems and used pieces of wood for the new stems. I just hot glued them on.

Next, I wrapped raffia around each stem, tied a bow and then put a touch of glue to keep it secure. I topped the raffia with a little fabric bow and glued a button on top.

I used a piece of burlap (I also frayed the edges) for the background for my “Happy Fall” wood sentiment. I painted the “Happy Fall” with Queen Bee.

This Dollar Tree sign is just right for a “kickstand”, and will make my project a shelf sitter!

TIP: Dollar Tree has these rectangular signs for all seasons. They are great for “extra” uses!

And here’s the finished piece! Y’all, I had fun making this, and I hope you’ll try your hand at making some fun fall decor for your home!

Let me know in the comments below what you’ve been crafting lately! I appreciate each and every one of you, and thank you for stopping by.

XOXO-Erin
