Glass Vases Snowman

Hey y’all, hey! This is a fun and easy craft to do with all sorts of options! The hat is made from cardboard and a paper plate and the body is made with two glass vases from Dollar Tree, so it’s definitely a budget-friendly craft.

Check out the video below, or follow along here on the blog for all the steps.

Supplies:

Lizzy and Erin Designs: Custom paint brushes

Dollar Tree: Glass vases / bowls

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint: White Swan

Stash: Paper plate, cardboard, red and white bakers twine, checked fabric, orange burlap, Christmas picks, Epsom salt

Walmart / Home Depot / Lowes: Minwax Polycrylic clear spray finish

Amazon: Half pearls for crafts, Deco Earth paint, Mod Podge, DAP Rapid Fuse glue Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Let’s make it!

Christmas picks like these are great for accents on crafts. I’ll be using the one with the gold balls and bells for my snowman arms.

I painted the glass bowls with Mod Podge, then rolled them in Epsom Salts.

To make the hat, I used a small paper plate for the brim (it’s the green one on the table) and cut the edges off. I had to use some Scotch tape as the edges of the plate split when I flattened it. I wanted to get good coverage with the paint, so I applied Mod Podge to the plate on both sides, then dried it with my heat tool before painting it. The Mod Podge actually helped give it some stability.

I used corrugated cardboard to form the top of the hat. (See TIP below,) and used hot glue to put the brim onto the top.

TIP: Corrugated cardboard is the kind with a rippled layer in between the outsides. Dampen one side and let it sit for a few minutes, then tear it off, exposing the rippled layer. I hot glued the top to the brim.

I just put some baker’s twine around the brim and added some pieces of my Christmas picks to give the hat some festive decorations!

Quick note! After I finished my snowman, I realized I should have placed the bottoms of the vases together! That way, my lights could just sit under the open part of the base. That would be better for the whole lighting situation, and you could glue the two vases together!

Our friend Bekah Williams sent these black half pearls to me, and you can find them on Amazon. They are great for all kinds of things, and I’m using them for the snowman’s eyes and mouth.

TIP: You can use almost anything for the eyes and mouth! Small beads (paint them on a strip of tape for easier application), even black cardstock would do.

I used a strip of the black and white checked fabric for his scarf. I just ripped a strip, then pulled the strings from one edge to make it a bit rustic. I hot glued it on, then tied it like a scarf.

I added some “snow” along the edge of the brim by painting White Swan from Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint. I also painted the edge on the top of the hat, but decided I liked it better black.

If you have been a frequent viewer of our videos, you will know that I cannot do faces. I try, but y’all, sometimes, it’s a hot mess express! Well, Bekah gave me those beads which, suddenly and without warning, came with some snowman face confidence! I’m loving how this one turned out.

I used DAP Rapid Fuse glue to attach my hat to the snowman head, added beads for buttons on the bottom vase, and put a string of fairy lights in the bottom. (The vases are not attached so I can access the lights. Put your bottom vase upside down so you can attach the two.)

He sure is cute, y’all. Let me know in the comments how you might display your snowman! I appreciate all of your comments!

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
