Hey y’all, hey! The wood for our project today was (not even kidding) IN OUR FIREPIT! It came from some renovation we did in our house, and later became a bench. BUT the bench didn’t do well outdoors so the pieces were about to be burned to a crisp! I saw them and decided to give them yet another life, starting with this panel. It’s all about the thrifty crafting, y’all, so let’s make a treasure out of this salvaged junk!
Check out the video below, or follow along here for all the steps to make some patriotic and festive decor of your own.

Supplies:

Amazon: Rusty star, Sanding Sponge, Deco Earth Paint: Maritime Blue, Star stencil, Waverly White Wax, Ranger Distress Oxide: Ground Espresso ink Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)
Hobby Lobby: Star ornament
Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: Marquee
Let’s make it!
The wood surface was already weathered just right for this project, so I began painting the red stripes with Marquee from Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint that I get from Milton’s Daughter. I used a wide brush for the center and a smaller one for the stripes along the edge.

I painted the star with Deco Earth’s Maritime Blue and dried it with my heat tool. I used the star stencil to create the stars. I bought the stencil from Amazon (linked above) and it comes with a lot of different sizes, which works great for me! I painted the stars with Waverly White Wax, then sanded both the surface and the star just a bit.

Next, I used my Espresso ink pad from Ranger Distress Oxide to create a rustic edge around the pieces. I hot glued the star and bow that I’d already made before the live, and added a rusty star to the center of the bow.

And here is our trash-to-treasures craft! Let me know in the comments how you are displaying your summer crafts!

But wait, ya’ll! Guess what we made last week in our private subscription group: THIS! It was a book and now it’s a vase for silk flowers! I enjoyed creating this so much after seeing one made by our friend Bekah at Bek’s Craft’n Spot. Join our subscription group HERE!
