Easter Bunny Decorative Basket

Hey girl, hey! Today’s project is made with power tools and Dollar Tree goodies, so hang on tight, charge up those drill batteries, (put on a helmet?) and let’s make it!

Follow along here on the blog or check out the video below. It’s going to be a fun one!

Supplies:

Dollar Tree: Wood houses, signs

Lowes or Home Depot: Paint sticks

Amazon: DAP Rapid Fuse glue Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: White Swan

Thrifted: Spindles from a bassinet, garland, Easter eggs, flowers

Hobby Lobby: Napkin (It says Brother Sister Design Studio 2019). I don’t know if they still carry this exact one, “happy Easter” wood sentiment

Michaels: Plastic chocolate bunny, excelsior grass

Walmart: Beaded carrots garland

Stash: Chocolate bunny, eggs, carrots

TIP: Whatever you choose to use for the bottom (I am using square signs from Dollar Tree), you want them to be as wide as the base of the house.

Let’s make it!

The first three images are of the first house. It was a BEAR to get that fabric off, y’all! I used my heat tool to heat up the glue underneath the fabric, and I still had to struggle to rip and scrape it off.

The bottom two pictures are of the second house. I used my heat tool and it came off perfectly! Dollar Tree clearly upped their glue game on that first one!

I sanded them both down for a smooth surface.

I painted the houses, paint sticks and the signs on sides and edges. (The signs will serve as the bottom of the basket.) Next, I sanded everything down.

TIP: It is easier to paint all the pieces before putting everything together. I always dry mine and then sand them down a bit.

This is how it will go together, plus sides made with paint sticks. It will also have the spindle handle.

For the napkin, I separated the plys. There were two for this particular one. Sometimes napkins are three ply, so just separate until the decorative top is a single layer.

Next, I put Mod Podge on the houses and glued each napkin on, then sanded the excess from the edges.

TIP: Be sure to center your design or focal point if there is one.

I used DAP Rapid Fuse super glue to attach my pieces together. Glues like DAP dry thin so you don’t have the bulk of hot glue.

I attached the little boxes together, then added just one house on one end. I’ll add the other house after I attach the spindle handle.

My husband Dave drilled a hole in the top of each house and at the ends of the spindle so they can be screwed together to form a handle.

Power tool time!

The first house went well, but…

…stay tuned….

I glued on the other house and lined up my drill with the screw…..

Here’s where things went off the rails! See how that house moved from where I had glued it? It flew into my NOSE! I’m fine, y’all, but be sure and wear your nose protection! Maybe a helmet, safety glasses, shoulder pads, knee pads, chin strap… I don’t know, but this startled the heck outta me!

I’m fine, y’all! I’m all good! #survivor

I’m gonna sneak up beside it this time… hold it down, and show it who’s BOSS!

The lesson here is that I have no business handling power tools!

Once the handle was screwed in, the bottom needed a bit of help… I hammered a nail into both corners.

I stapled my slats (aka paint sticks) onto the sides, then painted over the staples.

Next step: the floral foam. It was showing between the slats, so I decided to try to paint it! Can you paint floral foam? We will find out!

It actually worked! It shed just a bit, but at least the green won’t be showing!

I hot glued excelsior to the floral foam to create a natural looking base for the project.

I started filling the basket with my bunny, carrots and eggs. The bunny and eggs were on craft sticks and dowels so they could be placed securely inside the floral foam.

I think it looks cute, y’all!

And here’s the finished Bunny Basket! Let me know what you thing by leaving a comment here on the blog.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

XOXO-Erin
