Hey y’all, hey! I saw a woman on TikTok called Grandma Betty and she makes salt dough ornaments including teddy bears that are so cute! She’s bringing it back, so I am gonna bring it back for you guys!
Here’s our little collection, sure to be keepsakes to enjoy on our tree each year.
We made them a while back, and have a blog post with the recipe. Click HERE to see it!

Supplies and Ingredients:
- 4 cups All purpose flour
- 1 cup Salt
- 1 & 1/2 cups of water
- Mixing bowl
- spoon
- rolling pin
- measuring cup
- cookie cutters
- wax paper or parchment paper
- cookie sheet
- straw or toothpick
- paper clip
Let’s make it!
(This will make more than the recipe we used in the previous blog. If you want your ornaments to be darker, Grandma Betty said to add instant coffee to the water mixture. I didn’t have that, so I added cinnamon and instant cappuccino. You could also just paint them.)
Here’s the recipe:
- Preheat your oven to 250° degrees.
- Mix together the salt and flour and slowly add water and begin to stir it all together.
- Add some flour on your hands, rolling pin and the table you plan on rolling the dough on. This is an important part, as the dough will be sticky. If the dough seems too wet, just knead more flour in the mixture until it feels more like play doh.
- Form your dough in to a ball and begin rolling out the dough with your rolling pin (about 1/4″ thickness).
- Use your cookie cutters to cut out different shapes
- Line your baking sheet with wax paper and put your cutouts on the baking sheet.
- Don’t forget to poke holes in your ornaments before they go in the oven, so you can add string later.
- Bake in the oven on 250° degrees for 2-3 hours. I flip them over half way through to make sure they bake evenly
- Cool on a baking rack
I wrapped my leftover dough in wax paper and put it in the fridge overnight, and I think it will work just fine.

Grandma Betty on TikTok said to use water and a paint brush to make the pieces stick together. I thought the pieces would fall off once they were in the oven, but nope! They are stuck on!

Here are the ones we made last night. All they need is some paint!

To make the shapes, you can use cookie cutters or just consider what they look like in real life. Fat tummy for the teddy bear, round balls for heads and snowman shapes. My husband Dave made a hippopotamus just by molding the clay. NOTE: You will want to assemble your ornaments on a greased cookie sheet (using something like Pam).

Grandma Betty said to make a little sweater and fur for the bear, so I’m using a kitchen knife to detail him.

I cut a piece of a paperclip to add ribbon for hanging.

I gave him a heart, and now he is all ready for the oven.

I’m going to paint the ones we made last night. I just grabbed Apple Barrel paints in red, brown, green, and my orange Posca Paint Pen, plus a black and a white Sharpie Creative Marker. The bear kinda looks like Arthur the dog, but y’all get the idea. There’s that hippo my husband Dave made!

This sure was fun!
Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever made salt dough ornaments! I appreciate each and every one of you.
Thanks so much for stopping by,
XOXO-Erin
