Hey y’all hey! Today we crafted with some unknown metal thingies I thrifted, but girl, they just HAD to be sunflowers! I mean, look at the bright yellow color and the ruffled edges! What else could they be? Well, some friends suggested several things like maybe they are decorative track light rings, collars for stove pipes, etc. We aren’t sure, but they look like sunflowers to me!
The one we made today is on the left, and the “blessed” was an earlier one I crafted with a tart pan. It is still one of my favorite projects. Just click on the image to see it on a previous blog post.

Supplies:

Michaels Grab Bags: Framed arrow decor
Amazon: small tart pans Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)
Habitat for Humanity thrift store: Yellow metal thingies
Stash: Wood rounds, palette knife, cardboard,
Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: White Swan, Gravel Road gray, Gypsy Green
Dollar Tree: Wood stems, wood cubes, blue and white checked ribbon
Lowes or Home Depot: Gorilla super glue
Walmart: Waverly Antique Wax
Hobby Lobby: Berry garland, twisted paper ribbon (you might find it at Dollar Tree also)
Let’s make it!
I started out by removing the arrows from this sign I got in a Michaels grab bag box. I just heated up the glue with my heat tool and scraped them off the surface.

I painted two coats of White Swan by Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint, being careful on the edges. I like the teal color of the frame, so I didn’t paint over it.

Next, I used my palette knife to “scrape” on some Gravel Road Gray, also from Debi’s Design Diary.

I placed my “flowers” onto the surface just to see how I wanted to position them. I’ll glue them in after I finish the centers.
TIP: About these metal thingies: you can use any number of things for your flowers! Think small plates with frilly edges, tart pans, just look in your stash… you probably have something you can use!

These wood rounds are just right for our sunflowers! Our friend Ms. Teresa Prather sent me a spool of rope that I just hot glued to the wood. Then I spritzed the rope with water, and painted it with my Waverly Antique Wax.

I used Gorilla super glue to hold the wood to the metal.

This paper ribbon was a popular crafting staple in the 80’s, and it’s back! It comes in a rope form and all you have to do is open the twisted paper, taper one edge and pinch the opposite edge. Poof! You have a leaf! I hot glued five onto my project.

To add the flowers to my surface I used hot glue for a quick hold and Gorilla super glue for a permanent hold.

If you look closely at the one flower I’m working on, you’ll see a little wood cube. It’s from Dollar Tree and it just gives that one flower a little boost.

I had a bunch of wood peg-like sticks from Dollar Tree and I decided to use them as the stems. Note that they are laid out on painter’s tape so they don’t roll around while I paint them.
I dried them with my heat tool then sanded just a bit before hot gluing them to the surface. There’s also a “stem” tucked in just under the top flower.

To finish:
I used cardboard for the flower pot. This is a fun, easy, and pretty much free (because the cardboard is usually discarded) way to turn trash into treasure. Use corrugated cardboard (the kind with bumps between the layers as in the middle image). Spritz it well with water and set aside.
Once it has had time to soak in (maybe 15 min, depending on the climate), peel the top layer off to reveal the bumpy inside.
I used the little wooden cubes to keep it from being flat on my project.
I added moss on the top of the “pot”, then added some pieces of berry garland.
Lastly, I added a strip of blue and white checked ribbon and y’all know I had to top it off with raffia!
TIP: Put the wooden cubes just inside of the edges of the cardboard pot so they won’t show.
TIP: Twist the berry garland around a paint brush handle to make it squiggly.

I am in LOVE with this project, y’all! It was so much fun seeing it come together. Click here to see one we did with mini tart pans, fabric and buttons!
