Hey y’all, hey! I am so excited to have found these picture frames at the Dollar Tree! They are ornate, and would be beautiful with others for a gallery wall. But today we are going to make a special Christmas project inside the frame. Check out the video below, or follow along here on the blog for all the details!

Supplies:

Amazon: Mod Podge, Posca paint pens Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)
Dollar Tree: Ornate gold picture frame
Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: Gypsy Green, White Swan
Walmart: Ornament, Waverly Antique Wax
Hobby Lobby: Gold leaf sheets (near craft paints)
Stash: Hymnal sheet (any kind of music sheet will work)
Let’s make it!
These frames do not have glass in them, they just have the black backing board. That makes them even easier to craft with. You might also use it “as is” with some chalk pens and write something on the board.
TIP: Watch for small frames at yard sales and thrift stores. You can even make a project like this into an ornament for your tree.

I removed the back and used Mod Podge to adhere my hymnal sheet, then put a light coat of Waverly Antique Wax over the sheet. I trimmed the sheet to fit the back.
TIP: Add a little water to a little of the brown wax to get a light finish. I dipped my brush in the lid of the wax, then in water, then painted my sheet.
TIP: My hymnal is for crafting. You can use any kind of music sheet, or a page from a book.

This Walmart ornament is cute as it is, but I’m going to spruce it up a bit. First I put just a bit of hot glue where I was planning on cutting it (see first picture). It’s too long for this project, and I can use the remaining pieces later.
Next I painted it with two coats of Debi’s Design Diary Gypsy Green and tried it on for size!

Back to the hymnal sheet: I used Metal Leaf from Hobby Lobby. You can find this at other craft stores and also on Amazon.
Here’s how to use it:
Step one: Paint Mod Podge onto the edges of your page after the brown wax dries.
Step two: Put your leaf sheet over the areas that you painted with Mod Podge (while it is wet). You can put as little or as much gold leaf as you want.
Step three: Just brush away with a firm, dry paintbrush. That’s all there is to it!

The gold frame is bright, so I wanted to tone it down. I used Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint to cover it, then dried it with my heat tool. The last step was to sand it down so the gold would show through.
TIP: Another option is Rub ‘n Buff for gold highlights.

Here’s how it looks sanded, and with the music sheet!

Time for the ornament! Our friends suggested I put dots on the ornament, so I used my Posca paint pen. What a great suggestion!

I think this turned out beautifully!

Let me know in the comments what you think about this project! I appreciate each and every one of you!
Thanks so much for stopping by,
XOXO-Erin
