Hey y’all, hey! This was Mama Susie’s idea. She visited the Magnolia Market in Waco, Texas and saw a kid’s rag checkerboard with wood pieces. She was going to buy one, but it was $50. She was inspired to share the idea with me and here we are… Finn’s personal game board! It’s a great gift idea!
Check out the video below, or just follow along here on the blog.

Supplies:

Walmart: Plaid napkins
Amazon: Wood rounds (1 1/2 X 3 cm), star stencil, Mod Podge Matte Finish Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)
Milton’s Daughter: Iron Orchid Designs (IOD) Letterpress stamps, ink pad and ink.
Debi’s Design Diary DIY paint: White Swan, Marquee (red), Dark and Decrepit (black)
Stash: Burlap bag (You can get canvas drawstring bags at Walmart, Michaels, or pretty much anywhere!)
Let’s make it!
Here’s the napkin. There are four to the pack and they were priced at five bucks and some change.
The napkins only allow 11 game pieces per side, and a “real” checkerboard requires spaces for 12. It’s fine, because kids will enjoy it just the same! They can use their imagination and enjoy playing.
The wood rounds are from Amazon, and there are 100 for about $9. Y’all know I’ll be using them in lots of crafts.
TIP: To make this, you’ll need 22 wood rounds for each game.

Using black ink, I stamped Finn’s name with my IOD stamps onto a piece of muslin fabric.

I painted the wood pieces by laying them on tape, which makes the process so easy!
Next, I dipped my brush into water and then into the paint. I wanted a stained and rustic look, but if you want yours to be more vibrant, just don’t add water. I also wiped the pieces down while they were still wet, then dried with my heat tool. You can set yours aside to dry.
Next, I used my stars stencil from Amazon (linked in the supplies list above) and painted white stars on each game piece.

Here’s a closeup!

I sanded, then put Mod Podge on all of the pieces.

Here they are!

For the bag, I just cut the bottom from mine so it would be smaller (it was pretty deep), then hot glued it to seal.
TIP: You can turn the bag inside out and glue or sew it shut for a more finished look.

I hot glued the stamped “Finn” label onto my bag.
TIP: Put something inside your bag to keep the glue from going through.

Want two games in one? Simply stamp or write X and O on the backs of nine pieces to make a Tic Tac Toe game!

The finished game board! I know Finn will enjoy playing with it!

I hope you enjoyed this craft. It’s a great gift idea for any celebration! There are so many ways to decorate the bag or even change up the playing pieces. Let me know in the comments what you think! I appreciate each and every one of you.
Thanks so much for stopping by,
XOXO-Erin
