Americana Baskets Wall Decor

Hey girl, hey! I’ve been working on our camper renovation and took a break to create this patriotic American craft! I think you might enjoy some of the techniques, so check out the video below or follow along here on the blog for all the steps.

And by the way, did y’all know we have some great giveaways? Be sure to follow us on Facebook at Lizzy and Erin so you don’t miss out on the fun!

Supplies:

Lizzy and Erin Woodshop: Pompom maker

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint (Jami Ray Vintage Cottage Colors)

Dollar Tree: Small plastic baskets (these came in a 3 pack), fabric, floral foam, moss, chalkboard paint

Walmart: Waverly Antique Wax

Hobby Lobby: Folk Art Metallic (Sterling Silver) paint

Lowes or Home Depot: Four large paint stir sticks

Amazon: Craft sticks, rusty stars Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Stash / thrifted: Ribbon, raffia

Let’s make it!

These are little plastic baskets from Dollar Tree, and they come in this teal color. I will be painting them (you can see some metallic paint on the top two) and making them look like galvanized metal.

I started the project by making my surface. I used four of the large paint stir sticks and hot glued them together by placing craft sticks on the back.

Then I painted Waverly Antique Wax onto my surface and wiped it down after, then dried it with my heat tool.

Y’all check out this Jami Ray Vintage Cottage Colors paint! This one called Grey Skies. It’s a one step paint for heavily used surfaces, but we’re going to apply it as the base coat for my plastic baskets.

Tip: Check out the Jami Ray Vintage collection here at Milton’s Daughter!

I dried the base coat, then dabbed the Folk Art Sterling Silver and Dollar Tree chalkboard paint onto the basket. Just bounce the paintbrush until you get the effect you want!

I had already painted the other two, now it’s time to fill them with our decor.

TIP: If you want to make this interchangeable, now’s the time! Just create your decor and glue it to a small surface / floral foam, but don’t glue it in so it is easy to remove. Make something for every season and occasion!

You can see here how they look on the inside. I didn’t have to paint them entirely, just the handles and a little around the top edges. The filler will cover everything else.

I hot glued the rusty stars on the outside, then began working on the filler.

You can use the pompom maker from the Lizzy and Erin Woodshop to make the fabric flowers! My small one is missing in action right now, so I just made a messy bow by stacking strips of fabric together in layers of red, white and blue. The strips aren’t any specific size, they are actually different lengths. Girl, that works! I tied the pieces together with twine then hot glued them to a craft stick, fluffed them out and added a half bead to the center.

TIP: When you glue it to the craft stick, leave a little bit of stick at the top, then glue some of the fabric on that part of the top. It will make the flower stand up. (At the very top, the red striped and the white beside it are actually glued onto the top of the craft stick.)

I hot glued some raffia around the top of my baskets, and they are really cute just like this! You can glue them onto the surface and put all kinds of little somethings in them!

Next, I filled them with floral foam, moss and the fabric flowers. I also added some flags made with some Americana flag ribbon and skewers.

I hot glued the baskets on, then made a hanger. My hanger is just two pieces of blue fabric, tied together, then twisted and hot glued onto the back. I used pieces of craft sticks to cover the ends of the fabric for extra security!

And how stinkin’ cute is this!

Y’all, it was so much fun making this! And remember, it can be interchangeable. Let me know in the comments how you might style yours from season to season!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

XOXO-Erin
