A Hymnal For Christmas Decor

Hey y’all, hey! You might remember I was actually kicked out of Girl Scouts BUT it’s Halloween today and I found this at a thrift store, so I’m a Brownie at least for the moment! And one of our friends said October 31 is the birthdate of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts, so how sweet is this! And I didn’t earn these badges, girl… watch the video for the whole story!

Y’all know November is knocking at the door, so let’s get our Christmas crafting on.

Check out the video below or follow along here on the blog to see how we made this beautiful Christmas decor.

Supplies:

Amazon: Gold Rub ‘n Buff Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Thrifted: Hymnal

Stash: Christmas picks and decorations

Before we get to craftin’, here’s Juliette Gordon Low as shown on Wikipedia. The image was taken in 1923 when she was 62 years old. I think we might earn a badge for today’s thrifty project!

Let’s make it!

I started the craft ahead of time by gluing some of the pages, but I’ll show you how! I like to use old hymnals (any old hardback book will do), and I buy them from thrift stores. It’s super easy, just fold several pages (no crease, just roll the paper) toward the center and hot glue it down. Do this throughout the book. I left sheets at the beginning and end of the book and just glued them to keep them open. You can do all the sheets if you want, it’s up to you!

One of our friends gave me a kitty cat nose and ears. Our friends are so much fun!

For the finish, I held a bunch of pages and cut the rest out out to reduce the bulk. I’m saving the ones I cut out for future crafts.

I glued the unfolded pages to the book’s front cover, and because I had cut some out, the pages stuck out a little. Hey, I’m a Girl Scout (at least for the minute) and I know how to use a glue gun! I just glued them where they “should” fall in the book and it worked!

The book wanted to stand wide open, but I needed the covers to bend in a bit. I traced the open spine on cardboard, cut it out and glued it to the bottom to keep the covers bent toward the inside. One of our friends suggested using a craft stick, so I glued that on also!

I cut pieces from a Christmas pick to decorate the top. I glued mine in, but you could just place yours in the pages and change the florals out for different seasons. I went through my stash and added in more decorations, including some pine cones from another Christmas pick and a horn with a red ribbon. I hot glued the pine cones to skewers to add them to the arrangement.

I used Rub ‘n Buff to antique the edges of the pages, and just applied it with a makeup sponge. I added gold trim to the top and we’re done! This was a fun, easy project and a good gift idea, y’all!

You could also add a stamped message or even some more festive accents. Let me know in the comments what you might add to this craft! I appreciate each and every one of you.

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
