3D Bunny Portrait Sculpture

Hey y’all, hey! We are making a 3D bunny portrait with mostly Dollar Tree supplies. It’s like a mounted deer head, but bunny style! I love creating Easter crafts that brighten up the season, especially on these gloomy February days. BUT, the struggle bus drove up, ran over the hedges and screeched to a stop. I had to ride, but we eventually got where we were going!

Come hang out, check out the videos below, or follow along here on the blog for all the inspiration!

Supplies:

Dollar Tree: Bunny sign, craft sticks, wire wreath form, basket with rope on the bottom, rope

Amazon: Deco Earth paint: pink, Waverly Antique Wax, DAP Rapid Fuse Glue, Xacto knife, Apple Barrel Paint: Nutmeg Brown, Distress Oxide Ink: Ground Espresso, Micro Sanding Tool Click here to check out my crafting essentials (This is an Amazon affiliate link and I may receive a small compensation for items purchased from this link.)

Milton’s Daughter: Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint: White Swan, Mint Chip

Thrifted: Blue egg (for the wreath background)

Let’s make it!

Just in case you can’t find a bunny like this one, here are templates for the base and the eyeglasses.

And this is a paper mache bunny we made with napkins in Craftin’ and Laughin’ with Lizzy and Erin last year!

So y’all, I’ve been “thinking” on this one for a little while because it’s already so stinkin’ cute! The colors, the ears and those glasses! But we came here to craft, right? So craft, we will!

The bunny came from Dollar Tree, and I found the egg at a thrift store for just a dollar!

I began by shaping the wire wreath form into the egg shape, then covered with burlap by hot gluing strips around the form.

I cut the rounded ends from the craft sticks and then hot glued them to the egg, staggering them for the shiplap effect.

Next, I painted the egg shape with two coats of White Swan, drying in between coats with my heat tool. Then I lightly scraped my Distress Oxide ink (Ground Espresso) across the painted sticks for a bit of distressing.

I used wire cutters to cut the bow from the bottom of the bunny so we can make our own bow. It broke off pretty easily. Then I sanded down the rough edge.

I heated up the eyeglasses and carefully popped them off because I didn’t want them to break, then I sanded the glitter off the bunny.

Next, I considered a face, but decided to just hot glue a Dollar Tree basket to the bunny and not add a face. I added more hot glue around the edge to begin wrapping rope around the white part of the basket.

Y’all, this project has my wheels turning!

You know that struggle bus? Yeah, I was in the driver’s seat! I decided to use some air dry clay, which isn’t the kind I wanted, but thought it would do. Girl, it was not pretty, but I was determined! I actually brought out a Dollar Tree mop head, cut the strands and used masking tape, then the clay.

Oh, dear.

We almost have a Jackalope. That was not the plan, but here we are. We are on that road, y’all. There is no turning back. If it doesn’t look super cute, it can be chicken coop decor. That’s where any crafting fails go, and the chickens are still happy, so it’s a win-win!

So with that in thought, I added paper mache by mixing school glue and water and brown kraft paper. She looks like a chocolate bunny! Now I have high hopes that she won’t have to live in the chicken coop after all!

But wait! We have a plot twist!

I decided we could do better, so my husband Dave cut this beautiful frame for me! I painted it with Nutmeg Brown to get in all the creases. There are two layers to this frame (Dave is going to see if it’s feasible to make and ship, I know y’all want to know!). I “should” have painted the bottom layer (there’s a bottom and top layer) first, but y’all know, I like to make the mistakes so you don’t have to!

I added half wood beads and painted it with Mint Chip, and we have FINALLY exited the struggle bus (via the emergency door, but we are out now).

I painted the oval insert black and dry brushed it with white to give it a seasoned, chalkboard look. I sanded it, then used my Xacto knife to clean up any lines on the insert.

I glued the back to the frame using DAP Rapid Fuse Glue, and I’m loving it!

I sanded the eyeglasses (they had glitter on them) and painted them with Mint Chip. I also decided to weigh the bunny. After all the revisions, she is almost two pounds!

I added some Waverly Antique Wax to stain the edges of the bunny, and carefully painted the insides of the ears pink. Next, I used DAP to add the eyeglasses.

Our friend Michelle makes sculpted projects and she suggested drilling holes and putting wire through the back, then twisting it to make sure the bunny will stay on. I had already used glue, but it should be ok!

Well, this was interesting! The best part is, there are several techniques I used that might inspire you to create something special. Let me know in the comments what you think of today’s craft! I appreciate each and every one of you!

Thanks so much for stopping by,

XOXO-Erin
